Wills, trusts, and family law from an attorney in practice since 1975.
Brent Garfield has been a lawyer for more than fifty years. He works with each client himself, from his office on Ward Road in Arvada, and explains every step in plain terms.
How he can help
Most clients come to Brent to put their affairs in order, or to settle a parent's estate. Others need steady counsel through a family matter. Every engagement starts with a conversation about what you want to happen.
-
Wills
A clear, properly signed will that says who receives what, who settles your estate, and who would care for minor children.
-
Living trusts
Revocable trusts that can help your family avoid probate, keep matters private, and plan for a time when you can't manage things yourself.
-
Probate and estate administration
Guidance for personal representatives and trustees through Colorado probate, from the first filing to the final distribution.
-
Powers of attorney and medical directives
Documents that name the people you trust to make financial and health care decisions if you're unable to.
-
Trust and estate disputes
Representation when a will or trust is challenged, or when a trustee or relative won't cooperate.
-
Family law
Divorce, legal separation, parenting time, and support, handled with discretion and a long view of what's best for the family.
-
Business organizations
Forming and maintaining companies, and planning how ownership and management of a family business pass to the next generation.
Brent also advises on real estate and easements. If you're not sure whether he can help, call and ask.
Ten questions to answer before you finalize your estate plan
Brent has asked clients to think these through for years. You don't need every answer before you call. Working them out together is what the first meeting is for.
- What is probate, and should I avoid it to ease the burden on my heirs?
- What steps can I take to avoid probate?
- What is a trust, and how could it benefit me and my heirs?
- How do I use the exemptions from estate taxes and keep the value of my estate for my heirs?
- How do I take the headache out of managing my estate and make its administration as easy as possible for my heirs?
- How much will it cost to put my estate in order?
- How do I provide guardians and financial management for my minor children if I die?
- Do I need a living will for health care decisions, or a power of attorney to manage my affairs?
- What happens to my estate if I move into assisted living or can no longer manage my own affairs?
- If I own a family business, how do I manage the transition of ownership and management after my death?
Half a century of practice
Brent earned his bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University and his law degree at the University of Utah. He was admitted to the Utah bar in 1975 and to the Colorado bar in 1993, and has served families across the Denver area for more than three decades.
His practice is small by design. When you call, you talk with Brent. The person who hears your situation is the same person who drafts your documents and answers your questions years later.
Clients often find him through someone he has already helped: a neighbor, an accountant, or a parent whose estate he planned.
